How can I eliminate “7 Days Popular” and “By review Score” from the dropdown menu that shows up to the right of pages that the Newspaper theme generates? I have these features turned off on my site, but I don’t like how it says “no posts to display” or something like that every time people click on it.
If it’s not easy to eliminate them, is there an easy way to eliminate the dropdown menu completely?
Thanks!
Hi,
There are 2 ways to remove the ‘latest’ dropdown on category pages. The first involves editing the theme files and removing this part of the code: http://screencast.com/t/mqTUzHoRvo You have to do this for each of the category template you use.
The second method is to hide it with css:
.td-category-pulldown-filter{
display:none!important;
}
Thanks.
Hi,
I have just tested alternative 1 (removal in php file). This is not too complicated and works.
However, as a result of this modification an extra 20px (approx.) are added above the breadcrumbs and thus the whole category page is pushed down a bit. This happens with category template 1.
Can you recreate this? If yes, what else needs to be modified so that category pages without the pulldown look like those with the pulldown?
Thanks.
Walther
Hi,
I just tested this method again and could not see any addition of 20px above the breadcrumbs. The height stays the same. (42px for the whole container) Try to inspect the breadcrumbs and see where the extra space is coming from and make sure you only delete the code for the pulldown widget and not any other div tags from the file:

You can provide a link if you want me to inspect the issue.
Thank you!
Hi Bogdan,
I have gone through the same steps one more time and have made sure that I only delete the part you marked in the screencast, no div tags.
The result (on my end) is the same. There is additional space above the breadcrumbs:

Strangely enough this does not happen with the other method that you have described (hiding the pulldown with CSS – which doesn’t work properly with Chrome as the pulldown is visible for a fraction of a second).
Thanks for your help!

Hi Walter,
I have inspected your site and have found a strange part of code that causes the space: http://screencast.com/t/XaMJJrns. I don;t know where it comes from but maybe you will have a better idea. Maybe it’s a customization you made or maybe a plugin.
Thank you!
Hi Bogdan,
Great that you found the code. That has helped me to fix the problem.
I had used Notepad to edit the php file and saved it in UTF-8 format. That caused the strange part of code. I found the explanation here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6538203/how-to-avoid-echoing-character-65279-in-php-this-question-also-relates-to-java
I have now downloaded Notepad++ and edited the php file there. Everything works fine now.
Sorry to have bothered you with this.
Thank you.
