Is there a way I can change the meta description, meta title, etc easily or would I have to change it directly in the header.php file?

If I have to change it in the header.php file should I change it in a child theme?

Hi

You can use SEO by Yoas plugin to set your meta tags. This plugin is tested and works fine with our theme. More details in this regard can be found in plugin’s documentation: http://kb.yoast.com/article/146-yoast-wordpress-seo-titles-metas-template-variables

Thanks Andrei. I checked yoast out. It doesn’t give me an option to change the meta description and title for the homepage. Do you know if that option is supposed to be in yoast or in the theme panel for newsmag?

Hi

The theme does not have any options regarding the meta tags and meta descriptions. This tags are generated by plugins with seo functionality. Yoas have options to generate meta for each page: http://screencast.com/t/FVPFFDIE – http://screencast.com/t/ugptbBJcfX
