Recommended image size

Hi,

I’m trying to work out what is the optimum image dimensions for creating the initial (master) image to use in the newspaper theme.

The problem I’m trying to address is working out what areas of an image are safe to put key information into without it being cropped out by the many different sizes generated. Do you have a photoshop reference file with borders and safe margins that can be downloaded?

Also under media settings there are an additional 3 dimensions specified 74×74, 300×300, and 1024×1024 – the last two image sizes don’t seem to be generated, are they bypassed by the theme?

Thanks

So far it seems the 745×483 is best size.

Create new blank image in Photoshop that size. Put couple of grid lines about 50px from tope and bottom just for quick reference.

Resize image to the 700 width of posts and featured.

Crop from middle to the height. See where grids end up.

Anyway that’s what I did.

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for the advice – will give it a try, although will probably double up pixel size to be able to create higher quality artwork initially, and then half it on export. Might be able to accommodate the 1074×483 front slider image too.

If you’re not using an image optimizer for all the thumbs, like smushit or whatever; consider adding the “quality factor” setting to your functions.php (see my notes in the pagespeed sticky thread) – otherwise you’ll see the smaller sizes being crazy big like 60kb for featured category image, etc.
