Takeover-style ad w/ clickable background

I know Newspaper has a clickable background ad option, but I would REALLY like to be able to feature a takeover-style ad like this, at least on the home page:

I’m pretty sure that for this it would be necessary to tweak the code, since as it is the design doesn’t have as much space on the left/right margins and would certainly not allow me to wrap a background around the content like this.

You see this kind of ad usually on really big sites (IMDB, Huffington Post) or on sites that have a well-established niche audience, which is what I’m trying to be. Sometimes the background is just visible on the left and right, but sometimes it also pushes the content down. This is just done on the desktop version of the site, of course, since there’s no way to do this on mobile.
