Hey guys, I have installed plugin to show external featured image in posts, and it shows in WP admin. But it dos not show in GRID and blocks (like Latest from blog).
Is there a reason why Newspaper and Newsmag cannot show images from EMBED (like embed.ly or external featured images)?
This is some of the most exiting new things to work with runnning news websites, and would be nice to work with embedded articles.

You may need to use a plugin to take external image and add as featured image and media manager. I use auto post thumbnail pro here. WordPress can only make thumbs from local images. Theme uses wordpress image functions.

What I do is, that I use a service Embed.ly, I use an URL from a fine article anywhere on the net, that I want to bring on my site. And a embed Quote code is created. I use this code to put into a post and bang: there is a post inkl. Excerpts incl. Image. It shows in post, or anywhere I want it on a page using VC to ad a spot for it.
The only thing I cannot do is show this image as a featured image, when I use Grids & blocks, it shows the title, excerp and text, but nut the image.
I tryed the plugin you mentioned, I ´cant understand, how this could help me..Am I missing something..:-)

So, the plugin you’re using also adds a featured image to your media library, and shows on the post page as a “featured image” ?
If there is no local “featured image” for the post, then no thumbnail for blocks/modules can be created by WP.
Auto Post Thumbnail Pro (or similar) will take snap of first image in post or download and “create” and assign featured image to that post, which then is in the media library so WP can make thumbs resized for various modules.

So what I am trying to do, is to setup POST with code from EMBED. I currently use EMBED.LY. SO the post works allright. In the post, You will see image, excerpt and text. This is great, could it show in latest post and more, it would be perfect. What a great tool for a blog.
But there will be no local WP image, so it cannot be shown in grids and blocks. This is the fact, that You state Yourself…:-)
I deleted a plugin, SET: URL FEATUREd IMAGE (it did not do the trick), and then I tryed to install Your mentioned (the free version) AUTO POST THUMBNAIL. This did not do a nothing, AND I did generate the thumbnails.
Now I would love to buy the PRO version, but I am not sure this would work, r is the difference between the free and pro exactly this..:-) ?

I don’t know of any free version of the plugin I use from Themeforest which is $9.
Basically – use the visibility tab top right of your post edit page; toggle visibility of the ‘featured image’ box; unless you have a featured image for your post, no thumb will be created in blocks. Period. Full stop.
So, you need to use some type of plugin to generate a local image then set it as ‘featured’ in the WP media folder (WordPress itself has no function to make thumbs from external site images). Auto Post Thumbnail PRO, can create image from “first image in post” even if external; then that is set as featured image, then thumbs built from that now local featured image.
We do this on our news network where main site creates news, hosts image, then some of our satellite news portals for local news grab the national story and load the image from main site in post, then the plugn makes the local featured copy so that thumbs can be added to the national news page/index.
In any case, not a theme issue — as you know — since you’re doing something custom/unique unrelated to theme.
You can spend the $9 for legal copy and try it; I’ve been using it for 3 years flawlessly. I rely on it every day for hundreds of images. So, it solved the issue for me. Also solved issue when we moved to Newspaper in 2013 (rev1.0) and our old content on some sites from say 2005-2013 had no featured image, but had image in post. Solved that, too.
I have no interest or relationship to the plugin; but rocks for me 🙂
Just to be clear, this is the one I use on ALL our sites: Best $9 I ever spent on anything. I would have sent him more money if it was donation ware! 🙂
