I like it much more and its typical for the “bigger” online newspapers/magazines to show pictures this way and not with an lightbox effect.
Maybe with an option to show “description”, “caption”, “thumbnails”.
Another idea is to show pictures like the “Boston big pictures” as shown here: http://demos.gabfirethemes.com/t-switcher/?theme=patterns
Maybe this 2 gallery options could choosen by article templates?

Also you can use jetpack plugin that have some gallery stuff, or a plugin for galleries if you want something else.
