When a user tries to login in anyway on my website, the page just refreshes and it’s as if the user never attempted the login. could this be an issue with buddypress or do I have a configuration setting wrong? I’ve been looking online at potential redirects i’ll need but before we could click login in the top left corner and we’d see our user and a “log out” option appear where login/sign up would be.

Hello rlaparre,
Please keep in mind that the login/logout system from WordPress seems to work as properly with the Buddypress plugin. I have tested to my side and work as expected. If is not what you mean, please provide more details, some useful screenshots so I will be able to provide a more accurate response.
