Image Alt tags issue with theme

Hello team,

I seem to be having a problem with my image alt tags. SEMRush keeps telling me I have 13700 images that don’t have alt attributes. We insert alt text for all images.

Upon further investigation, my tech support (WP Curve) says the issue occurs with the captions as the theme’s core functions is overriding the default WP caption handlers and therefore the alt tags are not showing up.

Can you please tell me how to fix this? I am sure it is affecting SEO.

Thanks
Christina

Hello,

The alt tags are not supposed to show up if the image is loaded properly. The caption is but the alt attribute is shown when the image cannot be loaded. http://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_img_alt.asp
Our theme uses the default caption of wordpress but it will not show it on some post templates. It depends on the post style that you use. This applies to featured images. The rest will show the caption text underneath the image, but posts with parallax will not show the caption. Please provide an example, a link to a post that does not show the caption text.

Thank you!

Hi Bogdan,

I think I may not have described the issue very well. The problem is SEMRush tells me my images don’t have alt attributes and I am concerned this may be affecting SEO of the site. How do I fix?

Captions show up fine.

If your images do not have alt attributes, then you have to add them in. You will have to manually add them in as the theme does not have any such feature. We did not test semrush so I’m not sure what it does exactly. Please use google’s structure data testing tool as we never heard of this semrush and we cannot know how it analyzes content. Try google’s tests as they are more trustworthy.
Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Bogdan,

Thank you for the suggestion to check in google’s structured data tool. I ran a few typical posts through it and got 5 errors. How do I fix this?

Ok,
You will have to enable the author, the date, and a featured image on your posts.
As you can see there is no alt tag issue though.
Please provide a link to your site so we can inspect it.
Thanks.

Please advise what I need to do so I can instruct WP Curve to fix on http://www.travel2next.com

Hello,
Our theme does not need wp curve or SEMRush testing or any other tool to function properly. The structure data erors can be fixed easily by simply enabling the author and date from the theme panel: http://screencast.com/t/5iicyxAUKlZ ALso make sure your iposts have proper featured images set to them using the theme settings: https://forum.tagdiv.com/featured-image/
Everything you need is available. You just have to set it properly on your end. The errors will go away once you set the theme how google wants.
Thank you!

The settings you described have been enabled all along. Here are the settings http://www.screencast.com/users/christina.pfeiff/folders/Snagit/media/d691fa65-1427-4f7e-9732-4e17a7dc4fbd
Featured images settings are also same as above only no light box.
All looks fine visually but Google structured data tool is still returning errors.
Would you appreciate your assistance.
Thanks

Hello,

Please disable all plugins except visual composer, clear cache and reset cdn files if you use it. Also remove any custom code you may have in place (make a back-up before)
If you use a child theme, please switch to the main theme. Try to bring the theme as close to the original code as possible. And then test again. Please also restore any changes made by third party optimization tools.
If you still have trouble with this please contact us via email at contact@tagdiv.com and provide wo-admin so we can login and investigate. Please also include a link to this topic so we can identify you.

Thank you!

Hi,

You have an option to add the alt text on your images – http://screencast.com/t/sjTfjMo7 and you can inspect the frontend and see if it is applied on post page – http://screencast.com/t/CIPdNBUbxi and also on modules – http://screencast.com/t/Syi1g5H006KI
I have checked on my side and it works properly like you can see in the provided screenshots.

Thanks!

Thanks Alin,

In fact the missing alt tag is on the featured image.
I have of course added the alt text on the image, but no alt tag appears on the html code (only on featured images)

Hi,

You use a post template that does not use the alt tag. Post template 6 will not show the alt tag as well as the other post styles that use big featured images. The default post template however will show the alt tag. It depends on the post style you choose. Some have alt tags, some do not. In general, styles 3,4,6,7 and 8 will not show alt tags.

Thank you!
