1)You can try using the code below and place it in Theme panel, custom CSS area.
The code is ->
.td_block_mega_menu .td-icon-font{
display:none;
}
2)Please notice that does not exist an optimal dimension regarding on background. You should use what images you want. If you want to bring best results you should use HD images and also, you can use the Stretch option from Theme panel, like this -> http://screencast.com/t/QChbuG1jNes5
