Retina generation not working

Hello,

I have attempted today to try retina image generation on my theme. Unfortunately, it is not working, as in the images appear no different and seem to be using the same non-retina sizes on a clearly retina screen (rMBP 2015).

I have enabled it correctly and I have used the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin, but that didn’t help.

The size in question is a custom size that I added, 1068×600, that is going to be used on the home page (the site is not yet live). The non-retina version displays and generates correctly.

Looking at the theme’s media folder, there doesn’t appear to be any new images being created when I enable it.

Do you have any ideas for what may be the problem? Does the plugin support the retina generation?

I have actually noticed a bigger problem experimenting further.

Enabling retina for the custom size does not seem to have the desired effect, as explained. However, it also seems to make the image load at 1068×712, not 1068×600, which is the default aspect ratio for the full width image.

Is there some additional file I should be changing when adding a custom size so that it works for retina?

Hello,

You will have to upload bigger images so there is room to cut the image in the bigger size. The theme will not create a bigger image. It will grab the maximum size it can but if there is no bigger image uploaded it will still show the same size as the previous thumb. For example. You have an image thjat is 696 x 480 for example. The thumb used on posts is 696 x 0 and for retina you would need a double size image. Welkl the theme cannot create the double size from a small image. Add a size of 1920 x 1080 instead of 696 x 480 and then you will see a difference. You can make sthis test with existing images on very small thumbs where you will see a before and after result without uploading a bigger image. Make sure you also clear cache after you regenerate thumbs though

Thank you!

Hello,

But when adding the image to the post, do I use the custom size of 696x?

Or the full size for retina? (1392x)

thank you!

Hello,

Use the full size as the theme will use the thumbnail for the image automatically. Simply upload the biggest size and insert the image in it’s full size on the post and you will see that the thtme will not show the full size but rather a 696 px thumbnail

Thank you!
