Hi, I wrote to you in the Themeforest comment section (https://themeforest.net/item/newspaper/5489609/comments) about the fact that all my sidebars deactivated when I updated to the latest theme version. You told me it’s probably some sort of conflict with a plugin. I understand that, but the thought of trying to re-set all those sidebars is very daunting for me.
Here’s my question: I have a database backup of my site dated Dec. 22, 2016–before the update. Would I mess things up if I installed the database from that backup? Would it give me back my sidebars without the headache of going through each custom sidebar and re-inserting widgets? I’ve had to do this the last few times I have updated, which leads me to DREAD when it’s time to update. Or, would it take me backwards in the theme version?

Hello,
A database back-up only backs up the database, not the theme itself. It should bring back your content the way it was when you updated.

Bogdan, I’m sorry but I’m not a coder so I have no clue what this means. Does this mean it will add back the sidebars I had at first? I’m sorry but I have 14 unique sidebars and it is a chore re-setting them every time I update. Is there a way to update WITHOUT updating everything so I don’t have to keep going back and trying to remember what I had on my sidebars?
Please help!
Just thought of something: I backed up the entire theme in Dec 2016 using Xcloner Backup and Restore. If I restored this, would it conflict with the latest theme update? I’m just trying to find a way to restore my 14 sidebars without having to do it manually.

Well I’m not sure as we have not tested it. Make another back-up of you current theme and try it out. If it does not work, then simply restore the back-up you made now. One more question. Did you maybe activate a child theme or the main theme after the update. Sidebars are kept separately for each one is the child theme will have it’s own sidebars and the main theme has it’s own sidebars.

YES, that’s exactly what happened. After I updated, I went to Appearance>themes. The previous default theme was still active and version 7.6 (the updated theme) was showing but had not been activated. So I activated version 7.6 and that’s when all my sidebars were stripped. I had the “Default” demo installed.
NEW QUESTION: So what do I do? I’m going to plod back thru and try to reinstall 14 tedious sidebars, because I’m afraid that using the previous backup might destroy my site. But what’s going to happen when it’s time to update again? How can I avoid this happening again?

Well it’s best to not have 2 versions of the theme active and switch between them as wordpress will keep 2 sidebar entries in the database. In this case, you should start creating the sidebars from scratch as they cannot be copied from one theme to another, sorry
