I have “crop thumbnail to exact dimensions (normally thumbnails are proportional)” in media settings unchecked, and yet when I upload a new image, the thumbnail appears with a hard crop (when you go to edit image it appears correct).

Please keep in mind that our theme only crops the images from center to top if you are using the Thumbs. Here -> https://www.screencast.com/t/4liIp0TD you can see all the thumbs from our theme, depending on the used block. For more investigations, please provide your website URL so I can take a closer look.

The site is currently password protected as it isn’t launched.
What I don’t understand is that on the same page (like a category page), in blocks with the same thumbs, sometimes the images are cropped and sometimes they are not. It doesn’t seem from your description like that should be happening?

You should check your theme panel and check if all the Thumbs on Modules/Blocks are active if you want that all your images to be right cropped. Clear all your caches and check the results.

I figured it out. The images that weren’t behaving right were .gifs. When I replaced them with .jpgs it fixed the problem.
