Enabling ab testing with Google Content Experiments requires editing the theme, header.php iirc.

I’m wondering if you have any recommendations for best practices for implementing it?

Hi,

We have not made any tests regarding this, so I could not provide any recommendations in this matter. You could give it a try and follow the steps required, but also make a backup before modifying the theme files. Maybe other users have tried this and can provide a solution or valuable information for you.
