Hi all,
We recently launched a new site using the Newspaper theme (www.ilaks.no), and have a issue for which we cannot find a good solution.
All posts are assigned to a “News” category, and any featured article that should stay on top is also added to the “Featured” category.
As you can see on the site, there is one featured article shown on the top of the front page. This is achieved using a block which shows only one post, from the Featured category.
Following after, we have several blocks for additional articles (from the News category).
Our problem: we cannot reliably hide duplicate posts.
We have attempted to..:
1. Exclude the “Featured” category from the remaining blocks
This causes previously featured articles to disappear from the front page, as they are still in the Featured category. (We cannot ask all the editors to remove previous articles from the Featured category every time a new featured post is added.)
2. Use the “Unique articles” feature
Works well for the initial page load, but since we need pagination, this causes duplicates when loading additional posts.
3. Apply offsets to the blocks
This causes the top featured article to appear twice, which we need to avoid. We have no way of hiding the featured article from the subsequent blocks, as its position will change.
None of the above provide a solution that is satisfactory.
Do you have any suggestions to how we can solve this issue?
Hello,
This practice is not recommended (having all posts inside one big category) as you will loose the ability to filter them based on their category. It is best to have separate categories and filter separate categories on your blocks. The unique articles will not work with pagination.
The offset is used only if you filter the latest posts and the same category on all of the blocks. It will not work well with other sorting options except ‘latest posts’
When using a featured sorting option, there is no way of removing the post from the other blocks except the unique articles option.
Unfortunately there is no simple solution because the featured posts will show up in the block that sorts the category they belong to as well. The unique articles is the only option that can prevent this but it will not work with pagination. Sorry.
Thanks.
