Hello, thanks for the great theme that is Newspaper! Onto my issue: by default Newspaper has Retina images turned off. I turned them on for all blocks and sizes, and regenerated all thumbnails, as per the instructions you’ve left. However, what I’m continuing to get on both Microsoft Edge and Chrome, are the lower-res versions. I’ve tried clearing the browser cache, but it didn’t change anything. Only on Firefox, the pictures are indeed Retina-quality. My website is at http://www.gamerdino.com. Please let me know what I should do in order to fix this issue, so that all browsers start showing the Retina image variants. Thank you!

Please try to also clear the browser cache as the images are also kept in the browser cache. Please also test from another machine, not only the one you are testing now.

Hello, I’ve cleared the browser cache and tried from a different machine, the resilts are the same: Edge and Chrome show low-res featured images and thumbnails, and only Firefox shows the retina versions. Most pictures inside posts show up correctly, but post thumnails and featured pics showing on the homepage and all over the site are the low-res versions on Edge and Chrome.

Hello, I’ve experimented a bit more, and found that the site switches to Retina images if I zoom the browser to 150% (or set the display to 150% scaling).
I’m using a 2560 x 1440 px monitor, with default Windows and browser scaling at 125%, and it seems the Newspaper theme doesn’t load the retina images in Chrome and Edge at 125% zoom; it starts doing so at 150%. For some reason, it does load the retina images at 125% zoom in Firefox.
From this additional bit of info, could you help me out and let me know if there’s an easy fix I can do, so that the theme starts showing the retina images at 125% scaling?

You mentioned you use a windows device. As you well know, retina images will only be present on retina screens. A windows device usually is not a retina device. I could be wrong but Apple products are the only ones that are true retina displays so you might consider testing on an apple product as windows will not show retina images properly.

There really isn’t such thing as Retina, it’s all about the DPI of the monitor. You can easily use a Windows computer with a 2K or 4K display (high DPI), which usually requires graphics of higher resolution. For websites, it means they have to be set up so that they feed the high-res versions of images to both 2K and 4K dospalys, otherwise they look blurry. It seems like Newspaper is set so that it works well in this regard with 4K displays, but doesn’t feed high-res versions to a device with 2K monitor. However, the 2K monitor means Windows runs at 125% scaling, which means higher-res media than standard is needed for graphics to look well. The problem is Newspaper doesn’t show the hi-res media for a 2K monitor (around 117 PPI) in both Edge and Chrome. For some reason, it only does so in Firefox.

Thank you for the explanation. We only tested our retina image features on apple products. We did not run any tests with the images on windows devices. I will pass this information on to our development team and we will investigate this issue on 2k and 4k monitors and make the proper adjustments if needed. We will come back with a reply to this topic once we finish our investigations.
