I am in a bit of a conundrum here trying to use external images that do not show up. To be clear I am not hot-linking some other’s people content I am using Imgur as image reppo and whilst on other themes this was never an issue NewsPaper seems to have issues in displaying them images.
A separate issue that has been brought up several times but not addressed is the external featured image. Why not? Why would it be so difficult to have that. I am willing to link the thumb, medium, full and extra full size just don’t force me to keep uploading stuff on my WP server. This ain’t no average blog page – this is news related stuff with hundreds of pictures a day in some cases most of them already hosted somewhere.
That being said I would very much like that my external images would work.

Unfortunately at the moment there is no option to set external featured for the posts. That could only be achieved using a plugin or maybe a combination of plugins.
You could search here on the forum for plugin suggestions in this matter, or advice from other users.
