it’s possible to give each category a background image… but is it possible to make them clickable for advertising purposes? some clients might to only advertise in a certain section?

Hello,
Sorry but the background click ad only works for the whole site at once. It cannot be activated for a separate section only. You can maybe find an ad plugin that can provide this functionality.
