Hi,
That should work, if you have set the excerpt type to letters only the number of letters you have chosen for each module title excerpt or content excerpt, will be shown. Please make sure you are setting the limit for the modules and blocks you use.
For some modules there is a title length and a content length

Please provide an example of this. A screenshot with the settings in the theme panel with the module where you customized the excerpts, and a link to the page where the module/block is displayed.
