Hi!
I’m using a background image on my site, but it’s quite big and heavy. Could you give an advice what is the optimal resolution of this image i should use for 980px fixed layout?

Hi,

Try to optimize it (if you didn’t doit already). – http://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/
The resolution depends on the image, you can use a 300x200px blurry image stretched as a background or a detailed full hd 1920x1080px image or a pattern, it’s up to you.

Thank you, Emil G.

Good rule of thumb (almost a pun there), would be to keep the background image under 20kb if possible, and when saving in Photoshop (if using that) apply a slight blur of 0.25 or so when doing “save for web.” I’ve found an 800×500 image works pretty well. You can also go to greyscale to make the file smaller also, as there is no color data.

Thank you, guys!
I optimized it till 59Kb (less looks not good) with the size 800×500, bigger size weight much more

Yay! I had also meant to say try to keep under 40kb, not 20kb. Doh. 🙂

Avoid backgrounds with lots of red, as that doesn’t compress well with jpeg.
