And I emailed the above to my Hosting company and they responded with the following:

Since my Hosting company uses mariaDB 10.0.34 instead of the recommended or required MySQL 5.5 is this a problem? Do I need to find a new webhosting company to use the newspaper theme?
If they say there should be no problem, you could install the theme and check the results. The article you mention seems to point out they are compatible. So you can go ahead and install the theme and make tests.
