This message is not directed to the folks at TagDiv.
Best as I can tell, not only has this topic been around since 2016 (at least), but has of January 2018 the answer was that the theme does not support the Featured Image into the RSS feed. The lack of support and resolution of this topic after 2+ years is beyond comprehension.
For this reason, I believe the TagDiv folks are useless.
However, having said that, it seems there are plenty of people that have asked this question. Not sure if anyone has found a solution that works for both Desktop RSS and Mobile RSS…meaning…having the featured image available for all “@media” types.
Solutions we have tried seem to only focus on desktop RSS feeds and miss the mobile option.

We are concerned about adding more plugins to our website and would rather find code we can add to our functions file.

Can you be more specific on the mobile option. How are you trying to view the mobile option?
I am using the same code mentioned within that link you provided (but changing image size, etc), have been for some time and I have not had issues via desktop or mobile.
The code is also working on my site and the only thing I changed is the image size to a custom one that comes with the newspaper theme (‘td_696x385’).
