I would like to place a custom widget at the bottom of all of our posts that displays featured posts (or posts that have a certain tag or category). I want this widget to be right under the share buttons, and above the comments. How can I insert that?
I realize now the answer is to use a cloud template, not one of the regular post templates
except now I also realize that DISQUS comments won’t appear on the cloud template making this very problematic

That will be the case, only the default comments will show in cloud post templates. You could use a default post template if having disqus comments is required, insert the custom widget directly in the post template by code. Some related topics here
