Suggest an Ad plugin?

Hey Christopher and everyone,

What do you recommend for Ad plugins for Newspaper? I’m torn between AdSanity, AdRotate or Simple Ads Manager.
Are any of these, or others, nicer playing with the Newspaper theme?

I’m a newbie with serving ads on my site. So far, I’ve already got two companies to sign up so I’m having to manage the inventory myself. I’m using Google Calendar and an excel spreadsheet (I know, not very sophisticated).

Anything you like?

Thoughts? Feelings? Reactions?

Bueller?

Hi
I had posted something previously about various ad systems to use with the theme; but I don’t have the link to that handy. Likely a search of the forum might locate my pithy comments on the topic 🙂

and here is older post …. 🙂

Hi, I can’t recommend any one specifically; however a couple of the commercial ones are quite good. We have an in house system that does rotation and uses simple widget areas, so easy to plop on sidebars, and custom sidebars if needed.

Often you can install one of or more and see which you like, and then delete the ones you dislike.

If you have a large site with big traffic,
Google DFP is popular.

Simple Ads Manager is popular, and free.

BuySellAds(PRO) is being used by a friend of mine and is quite happy. We looked at that, but we had simpler needs.

OIO Publisher is being used by several WordPress “how to use WordPress” sites like WPBeginner.

AdRotate is the stepchild of the same code we use for our own in house system, which is effectively a simple rotation system with shortcode support and widget support for ad “spaces” with unlimited number of ad units and types “per space.”

I’d start by looking at those. 🙂

Cool, thanks!

Care to cut those choices down for a newb like me?

From the sound of the above, it appears AdRotate might work. But the real question is, are any of these nicer to NewsPaper than others?

Thanks for any advice.

All should work fine …. Newspaper is designed to work with all “correctly coded” plugins. Or put another way, any plugin which is WP 4.0 compatible should work just fine. Anything not updated for WP 4.0x might have issues, and/or if it’s just badly written. But luckily those suggestions are all doable, you just need to see which one might fit best with what you’re doing. We basically took older iteration of AdRotate and customized for clients with our branding, and some minor tweaks…. we still use it after 4 years? No issues with theme or WP 4.0 since it’s pretty simple stuff. Obviously these systems are designed to go into widget areas or shortcodes in normal WP locations, and maybe not in visual composer shenanigans, or inside the Newspaper ad spots … but that’s the fun to be had 😉

We’re leaning toward getting license for BuySellAds(PRO), to let cat outta the bag on that 😉

So Christopher, you were probably waiting with bated breath to hear what Ad plugin I decided to use. I tried Simple Ads Manager but the lack of instructions and the Russianenglish grammar of what instructions were there was causing waaaaaay to much energy. So, I went with AdRotate (free version just for right now) and am MUCH happier that I can actually read the instructions and comprehend them! So there you go. Mystery solved. Thanks for your thoughts by the way, I appreciate it!

Yup. Been using our (hacked to add our branding) version of AdRotate for years. Just keeps on working. Dead simple to use, and compatible with everything.

Good choice 😉

I have been following you thread and decided to test AdRotate locally and It seems to work pretty well. What i really like is the possibility to place the ads inline just telling to place it before or after x paragraphs in a particular category. And it is very easy to align it (left, center, right or block). No short codes needed!!!

Now I have some concerns: are this ads responsive? And what if i want a post with No ads at all?

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I use a combination Custom ADS from Newspaper to shortcodes creation, and quick adsense for the rest. You can randomize your ads and get high CPC in all your adsense ads

Hi Schauvin,

Although I’m not an expert, I do know you can make responsive ads work with AdRotate, see my screen shot… (http://screencast.com/t/g8BUAcAfnxs). Note that you have to create the different sizes for the responsive ads (I don’t think the software does this automatically).

Also, although I’m not doing so I believe you can actually have no ads at all for certain pages. There are multiple ways you could do this, including creating a custom page type (for no ads) and assigning that page type in NewsPaper.

Another neat trick is to just use the shortcode INSIDE of the newspaper Ad spots. I did this because I was tired of trying to adjust the AdRotate ad to look like the same version I had been using prior to that via NewsPaper Ad in the theme panel. All you have to do is…

1. Create your ad in AdRotate
2. Copy the shortcode and place it into one of the Newspaper Ad positions.
3. Sit back and enjoy the beauty of your ad, controlled by the NewsPaper theme.

Here’s a screen shot showing how the Ad from AdRotate in position on my website using “Sidebar Ad” in NewsPaper… (http://screencast.com/t/2e8sle8Wo)

And here’s a screen shot of the shortcode for the AdRotate ad inside of the “Sidebar Ad” section of the Theme Panel (http://screencast.com/t/wWGEttxhuHF).

Hope that helps!

@ctomlin

I second that emotion 🙂

Hi @ctomlin:

I have 3000 posts (in 8 categories) and 3 placements (inline ads) so copy and paste the shortcode is not an option for me!!! The post injection works really nice.

I think that your idea of creating a custom page type is a winner.

And concerning the responsive ads I was worried about the Adsense ads as the others are not a problem because as you said it’s a matter of uploading the different sizes.

Thanks

Am curious, would using an ad plugin (like AdRotate) put more load on the server rather than placing direct code from the ad network in question (like AdSense, etc.)?

I’m using Ad Inserter plugin and I’m happy with it.
