Is there any way to adjust or add extra requirements on the registration form and changing the e-mail template that a user receives when going through the registration process.

Hi,
The theme login modal is just a visual improvement over the default WordPress login/register implementation. Adding more elements in this modal would be possible only be making modifications to it’s code

To customize the email you could try what is suggested in this topic, or maybe with a plugin that can do it
