I am curious, If I decide to create a different site later down the line and switch domain names, is it possible to switch the registration to a different domain and unlink it from the old one?

Hi,
That is possible, the license key can be reset from the theme system status panel
– http://prntscr.com/ma1ds6
Then you can activate it in the new location, there will be no problem.
