HTTP ERROR 500 after theme update

I have an urgent problem.

I’ve updated the theme via FTP, and as soon as I activated it I got HTTP ERROR 500.

My site is https://atma.hr/

For last 3 hours I’ve been trying diferrent solutions but nothing works.

I don’t have a hosting provider, I have rented my own server with hosteurope.de and have 2 more sites there which work fine. So I can’t contact my hosting provider since I’m hosting it.

I was prolonging this update for a few moths and my worst fears came true. It’s really frustrating. makes me never want to update again.

Please help me resolve this matter.

Thanks

I have tried following:

– define( ‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘256M’ );
– changed the name of plugins folder
– reuploaded wp-admin and wp-includes folder from fresh wordpress
– renamed .htaccess file
– tried changing the PHP version

Even when I change the theme to twentynineteen theme with phpmyadmin, nothing changes.

What version did you update from?

Did you do anything else apart from deleting “Newspaper” folder and uploading new one?

Post count: 62

Don’t know for sure but it was 8.x maybe 8.6 or something like that.

So I have deleted Newspaper folder via FTP and uploaded new folder.

I have Newspaper-child setup, so I have activated Child theme, and then it happened.

Try deleting the child theme.

Error 500 has a number of likely causes. Here’s what I’d check:
– Make sure you have no errors in .htaccess and wp-config.php files, particularly syntax errors. If you have edited wp-config.php, check that your editor uses UTF-8 encoding and not something else.
– Increasing WP memory limit will have no effect if PHP memory is lower than that. Check with your host if you can’t configure PHP yourself via php.ini or user.ini or however you have it st.
– Empty all caches, purge CDN cache as well if you use it.
– Delete all plugins that come with the theme (TD Composer in particular) then upload the new versions.
– Check your Child theme code, maybe some changes are required there. (You can see the default template in /code folder that came with the theme).
– Deactivate all security options temporarily (firewalls etc).
– Anything in your error_log file?

I have deleted Child theme.
I have tried with new .htaccess file.
I have tried with new wp-config file.
Memory limit on my server for this site is 512M.
I have deleted cache plugin (Wp Rocket) and deleted cache folder. On Cloudflare I have purged cache also.
Plugin folder is renamed so all plugins are disabled.

I have error_log file and there is a ton of stuff but I’m not familiar with it. Can I send you to have a look?

thanks

Upload it somewhere, it will probably be useful for TagDiv support guys as well.

It would also be a good idea to see if WP Rocket was uninstalled properly: https://docs.wp-rocket.me/article/694-uninstalling-wp-rocket

Don’t forget to clean your .htacess if anything remained there.

How to upload it? Where?

I’m really frustrated about this. I have followed the instructions for updating the theme and I am paying for it. I really expect a solution from theme authors.

Note that this is not necessarily related to the theme. (Disclaimer: I don’t work for them).

Upload it to your Dropbox or WeTransfer or anything really. Or take a screenshot of most recent lines and post it to http://www.screencast.com/

You can also use https://codeshare.io/ for example.

Don’t upload anything that could compromise your security.

I wasn’t aware of all the steps to remove WP Rocket. I did that now. Still no change.

I, too, after updating the theme error 500

Post count: 82

You have a massive number of errors caused first by load.php and then later by wp-db.php file. Both are called via your CDN.

This sounds like either cache or CDN problem.

Make sure you have completely cleaned up WP Rocket installation, maybe try reinstalling it and then uninstalling it properly through its own interface. Purge CDN caches again and see what happens.

Check again that WP Rocket didn’t leave any code in .htaccess file.

The error occurs after installing the td-composer plugin

Post count: 82

@Alexdiag I was replying to @dharma3d. Your issue is probably different.

Post count: 62

What can I say, I’ve deleted WP Rocket following these instructions – https://docs.wp-rocket.me/article/694-uninstalling-wp-rocket

Since I can’t access my WP-admin there is no other way I can do anything.

I’m using also Cloudflare which has it’s own caching and I’ve purged everything and even disabled it for the moment.

This is the content of .htaccess file:

# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ – [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>
# END WordPress

So what do I do?

I’ll send you a new error log made after I’ve deleted all WP Rocket connected stuff.

Well that is certainly… complicated.

Maybe theme support guys will have an idea, but again, this may not be caused by the theme.

For reference, what else did you do when you updated the theme? Did you uninstall WP Rocket before or after the error? Did you reinstall entire WP?

What about your host, have they checked it out? Maybe you could ask them to restore a backup and work from there.

Post count: 62

No, I did not do anything. I just updated the theme. Nothing else.

Here is the new error log file made after I totally cleaned WP Rocket., please see if there is some more useful information

You said “Maybe theme support guys will have an idea”. How can I get in touch with them?

Post count: 82

They will get to this thread, yesterday was their national holiday so I presume they’re quite busy now.

But honestly in this situation I would ask my host to restore the backup from before the error. They should at least be doing weekly backups. Then download everything locally so you have your own backup and start the process again. There could be a number of causes and error 500 is notorious for being hard to catch. And trying to solve it has potentially made it even more complicated.

EDIT Sorry just went back to the original post and saw that it’s not an option. Try to find a local developer to have a look at it.

I have some time to kill so I could have a quick look at it if you’d like.

Send me FTP credentials to vikingkrok@gmail.com.

Your admin area is now available, I sent you an e-mail.

Post count: 62

We have managed to get wp-admin back, but as soon as the new theme is activated there is again 500 error…

Post count: 62

Situation at the moment is that my site (https://atma.hr/) is working with 8.5 version of the theme.

9.x doesn’t work for me – HTTP ERROR 500
8.7 also doesn’t work – HTTP ERROR 500

I didn’t try 8.6, I’m scared to try it.

THIS THEME HAS 1 MONTH THAT BUYS IT AND IT ONLY RESULTS ME HEADACHES IS AN EVIL THAT THE DEVELOPERS DO NOT DELIVER A PRODUCT TO 100% IF THEY ARE GOING TO DELIVER A PRODUCT ASEGURENSEN THAT WORKS EVERYTHING GOOD IF THEY DO NOT PRESENT HALF PRODUCTS. NOW AFTER THE UPDATE I SEND HTTP HTTP ERROR 500. UPDATE YOUR THEME AND COME MORE ERROR THAN LAST. CAN MY MONEY BE RETURNED?
