The mega menu hasn’t been designed to be used into a sub-menu like you did according to the screens you provided so you need to add the menu-item for which you have chosen the mega menu to the menu bar and then assign the mega menu feature to it.

Subcategories are one and sub-items are different just to be clear, so you don’t need to set the subcategories as sub items like in the image above, you need to set them as subcategories of the category you want to use the mega menu.
