i would really like a specific shortcode to work in the review description area, is it possible to add this functionality through a child theme?

Hi,
By default that is not possible, that field can’t display shortcodes unfortunately. This will require modifications to theme/composer files to achieve. Modifications that will be lost after a theme update because they are not possible to do in a child theme anymore.
The better solution would be to maybe consider using a review plugin, that has the capabilities you require. Try some free plugins for example
