Since the Newspaper theme incorporates the Revolution Slider plugin, I think I got infected through the theme and may not be the only one here.
Do you have any additional information on this?

The theme comes with Revolution Slider as an optional (not incorporated) plugin. This issue was fixed in Revolution Slider v. 4.2, the latest version of the theme comes with version Revolution Slider 4.6.0 – http://screencast.com/t/ZH4hjkjjI.
Check if the plugin was installed and active, and if you used an old version. If you didn’t then the cause of the infection comes from something else.
