I want to add functionality for users to write their own posts and submit them for approval before they go live. My previous website used WP User Front end plugin to achieve this. Does the Newspaper theme work with this plugin or can I build in a user dashboard and form for user front end posts?

Unfortunately this option is not available with Newspaper Theme. Also we have not tested any plugins into this matter so you will have to check them yourself.
