I’m currently testing the Newspaper theme and mostly liking it. But the Related articles it shows are very basic with either category or tag-based recommendations. Can we instead use plugins like YARPP? For a sophisticated theme like this aimed at News websites, the related articles section has to be sophisticated as well.

YARPP has not been tested with Newspaper Theme. You can try and see how it works, but please note that untested plugins are not covered by the Newspaper Theme.
