Hi – I’d like to customize the post template to add either a list of the most recent posts or maybe the most popular posts in addition to the related posts at the bottom of each post – not in the sidebar. Is that possible? I tried editing a custom template, but it didn’t let me add additional elements.

If you use a cloud library template for posts you will be able to edit it using tagDiv Composer and you can add blocks.
