I use 741 X 486 (and retina) for the single post featured image on mobile. I run into an issue where if the retina version (1482×972) can’t be generated it defaults back to the full image instead. So let’s say I upload a 1500×800 image the retina image can’t be generated because the height isn’t over 972px high. But on retina devices the featured image now displays the uncropped full image size, which messes up the ratio of the image. Why doesn’t it show the 741×486 image instead?

So if you are using retina and you upload an image higher then 741 X 486 but with an height lest then 972 then as you say the retina thumb can not be created therefore the theme will set the full size of the image since this is the highest that can be use.
I make a not to our developers to see if you can use a function or something to use normal size if the retina image can not be created.

Well this doesnt make sense for featured images since you want to create uniformity across all posts. We cant set a height % or px on single featured images in the tagdiv composer, that’s why we have to chose from a certain image size with a fixed aspect ratio. You want to have all featured images on all posts have the same dimensions with the same height. Defaulting back to the full image instead of the “normal image size” breaks the layout and isn’t desired behavior. Maybe something to take into consideration for the next update?

If you are using in pages flex elements you can set the height of image -> https://i.imgur.com/eJPOJXY.jpg also if you are using a single post template you can choose to use Single Post Bg Featured Image and you can set the height for featured image -> https://i.imgur.com/OnyIhGt.jpg
