2.I’m not sure what you mean. Here you can find predefined columns from footer. In Widgets section you can add blocks to the footer’s columns: http://screencast.com/t/24tKzKCnz
3. It is not a ideal size, you can use any image size bigger then 537x360 anyway the image will be cropped to fit in that size.

1. Yes it will be overwritten if you use the main theme. You can use child theme to modify some files this way you can keep your changes even if the theme updates: https://forum.tagdiv.com/child-theme-documentation-newsmag/

6. Unoftunatelly I can’t recommend and guarantte you a plugin that will work with newsmag as we haven’t made any tests with any plugin of this kind.
