Is there a way to appy a custom wallpaper/background to a page created with visual composer. You have the option to allow a different background for each category but can this be done with a page as well?

Unfortunately there is no option to have different background for each page, you will need custom work for this. You can get someone to help you with this we cannot offer custom work for the moment because we work hard on the development, updates, fixes and support.
Only theme options are site background and background for each category(this also is apply for that category’s posts).

If I add the plungin that allows you to assign a category to a page and then use the category page in the theme to change the background, do you think that will work?

Not sure, i didn’t do a test. You could also doit manually, each page has a custom unique class based on it’s id. – http://screencast.com/t/cKPI8Ib3 – You could use custom css to set a background.
