Newspaper Theme does not offer any option like this. For this you will have to use a 3rd party plugin or contact wordpress for this.

I have now tried several category excluder plugins but none work. I conclude that there must be something that newspaper theme does that somehow overrides. For example with the Ultimate Category Excluder plugin. Please advise a plugin that actually works. Thx

I am sorry but what exactly do you mean when you want a category to not be shown. You could remove it if is not needed.
As mentioned above Newspaper Theme does not have a function to hide categories.
