Theme 1.6 Version and New Visual Composer broke my site

I updated the theme using Envato Auto update and updated the Visual Composer plugin and my website went away – leaving a blank page.

I tried to get my site back and the only way I can is to delete the new visual composer plugin – but it breaks the site without it. I am not sure what to do now – everything worked beautifully before this update!

I have spent two hours working on the compatibility issues with my site and the newest 1.6 Newsmag theme and Visual Composer –

It does not work with the latest versions of Jetpack or Wordfence – two critical plugin tools that I need for my site.

I love this theme but it seems that each time you have updated there is much work that has to be put back into the site including the widgets and sidebars – I am getting frustrated.

Wordpress has inherent problem of losing sidebar widget settings when changing theme. Not theme specific. Saving your settings from the theme panel helps.

I also highly recommend …not… Using the envato updater.

Use my upgrade guide and it should be painless not counting and special plugins.

The first time I tried the update was with the Envato updater – but had to delete theme and Visual Composer plugin to get the site back. I did follow your instructions here in the forum 5 times and still the only way it works without breaking site is with taking out Jetpack and Wordfence which are two plugins that were previously working with 1.5 version and now does not work with your new version 1.6…

What will you be doing about compatiblity with mainstream plugins like these because they are critical for users.

Unfortunately, I spent too much time yesterday on troubleshooting and if I turn on Jetpack I would have to turn off visual composer which would effect my site and I don’t want to keep doing this.

Right now all of the posts where I used the JETPACK photo gallery (which is a lot because we cover Red carpet events) are not transformed into thumbnail photos and I would have to go back to all of them (hundreds) to change them to something else….

I will wait for you to look at these two plugins for compatibility because I am not going to be the only one who has this problem…

Note Visual Composer and JetPack have long history of on/off/on/off problems, including images, the sharing tool, publicize, etc., and nothing to do with the theme itself. Sadly TagDiv cannot “fix” any issue with VC and other plugins.

You can try going back a version on Visual Composer, as that will sometimes work.

Alternately, consider that you may need to “freeze” your setup in between versions while compatibility issues between things “catch up” to changes.

So, “go back” to what works, then wait a dot revision on everything and test again.

If you’re using a high value production site, you can also consider making a test install someplace, such as a sub-domain, or even a sub-directory of your site, and test the plugins work together after version changes — then don’t propagate to the production version if one plugin doesn’t work well with another.

The great thing about WP is having the hooks and plugins to extend what it does; the bad thing is that all you need is one “bad actor” to load jquery wrong, or use a common class name, or something else, and it breaks all the pipes.

I’m sure you already know all of that, but just some input on this which I’ve had to suffer myself with 10 years of WordPress shenanigans.

Now I can’t even disable plugins to log into Admin – i am getting these errors

Is this because of the galleries being set up in Jetpack but not available anymore?

To disable all your plugins, see my upgrade theme guide.

FTP in, change plugin folder name temporarily to

xplugins

then login.

If theme borked also …. delete theme folder;
WP will revert to its current default “twenty-whatever” theme.

You can then login normally.

Hey Chris – I have done this several times. I got hung up again with losing access from WP ADMIN like yesterday… saw these errors and thought it was something that could be fixed. I had to get support on the site from outside but now I am too afraid to do anything else…

I love your theme but have had so many issues – my last theme – 2.5 years and no issues at all… I am getting to know WP too good but this is effecting my reputation with my audience as they are upset at the site going down or having visual issues… including some potential sponsors.

I will persevere for now because I love the look…

Not “my” theme; I just have been using the TagDiv stuff the past 15-16 months on daily basis, and WordPress for 10 years, so often have some insight from personal experience. 🙂
