Wpengine Plugins Problem with social-counter and speed-booster

I am hosting my site at WpEngine.com and according to them the .git folders under the two plugins are preventing their system from creating backup points.

/wp-content/plugins/td-social-counter/.git
/wp-content/plugins/td-speed-booster/.git

Are these folders necessary or can I just remove them?

Please help!
