CATEGORIES

Hi

I only tag one category per article but in some I want to take few.

The thing is that if I do this, on some occasions the URL changes too and I don’t want it.

For example, there’s an article i want to tag in the UK category so it’s something like europe/united-kingdom/name-of-the-article. However I also want to tag the London category which is inside the UK one. So when I tag London the URL changes into europe/united-kingdom/london/name-of-the-article. I don’t like this because the URL changes and that’s an issue for Google. But I also want the article to be included in the London category…

How can I do this? Thanks.

Hi,

To solve this, you can ensure that the URL structure remains the same while allowing articles to be assigned to multiple categories. Here’s how you can achieve this in WordPress:

Set a Primary Category:
Use a plugin like Yoast SEO or Rank Math, which allows you to set a primary category. This way, even if you tag multiple categories (e.g., both “United Kingdom” and “London”), the URL will be based on the primary category (e.g., /europe/united-kingdom/name-of-the-article). The additional categories will not affect the URL structure.

Custom Permalinks:
You can customize how WordPress handles permalinks by going to Settings > Permalinks. If you’re using a custom permalink structure that includes categories, make sure it is set up to use only the primary category.

I am using All iN SEO and I think it only offers this possibility on the pro account. Is there any other option?

Hi,

Then you need to buy the pro version of the plugin.

Thank you!
