I’ve got several authors in my WP site with Newsmag theme.
When a user has a WP account associated, it takes his Gravatar image, and website shows it properly inside author box (under the post).
When I upload an author image, author box is a little bit enlarged and not properly formatted.

I also checked this using WP User Avatar plugin and I couldn’t recreate this. Not sure why you have this issue, please provide more details about how you have uploaded the image and the size of the image that you used.

I’ve got WP User Avatar too, and I’ve uploaded Pic using WP User Profile standard menu. Pic is 96×96

Please try this with a bigger image – http://screencast.com/t/FmfO8bneBhI and without any plugins active, leave just Visual Composer and WP User Avatar active, clear cache and check if it works.
