Changing color of sidebar and content area

I use this theme for my Chat website.
I’d like to make the sidebar and content area darker.. black, grey or something.

I marked the area i want to make darker in screenshot here:

Could someone explain me what custom code should i add to make this possible?

To change the background color use this custom css:

.page-sidebar-left{
background-color:grey!important;
}
