latest post module only 1 column and site width

I am new to this theme and just messing around trying to set up a homepage and I noticed that when I select the different modules for latest articles it is only 1 column instead of 2. If i get rid of the sidebar then 2 will fit, but I would like it to look like the demo site with 2 columns of articles using module 1. It looks like there is plenty of room, its just white space. Also, the demo site is a full inch wider than my site, how can I make my site wider?

so my site definitely isnt the right width, because the 4th and 5th images for the “big grid” are showing up under the large 1st image and not fitting next to the 2nd and 3rd images to the right.

thanks, that was the problem, weird though, cant remember the last time i zoomed
