I just upgraded to the last version of the theme, and suddenly it seems that my pictures takes forever to load?
Example:

When I enter the page, the site loads fast (Wpengine, CDN enabled) – but the pictures wait 3-4 seconds and then suddenly all the pictures appear at once.
Anyone have any suggestions?
disable any “lazy loading” images setting
a) first try the theme panel for theme option
then
b) try changing any such setting for WPengine
That’s called lazy load. The pictures are supposed to show up delayed like that so the content can load faster. Search the forums if you want to disable it in Newspaper; there’s a code tutorial lying around somewhere. Theme panel only includes controls for the annimation effects under Theme Panel > Template Settings
