I have tested this feature again with all versions of the theme and it works fine.
It only works on Posts (not on pages) and you have to be careful to insert the code after a closing html tag. (in the text editor not visual one)

If these conditions are met, try checking your site’s console for errors, or check if you don’t have a plugin interfering with pagination.
