I’ve purchased your wonderful theme yesterday. It is excellent, the best in the market.
But as for me, I’ve got in to trouble. The problem is that it need big pictures. My existing website uses small. So there are about 500 pages and some of them has only as little images as 150×150.
As for now I see that I can open everyone image manually than to enlarge it with some image editor (I use GIMP) than save and download it back to it’s place.
The recommendation to use Thumbnail Regenerate plug-in does not help. Is there any other way to settle this problem?

Hi, we had same issue with lots of 300×250 images.
We also didnt have them set as featured pix.
So, track down the free thumbnail upscale plugim on wordpress.org, them do the regen thumbs again.
I ended up using the auto post thumbnail pro plugin on envato, it can generate the pix and assign as featured images from first image placed in post, if you dont have all your old pix set as featured.

If your featured images are smaller that the thumb you can try to use a plugin like Thumbnail Upscale to enlarge thumbnails and Force Regenerate, as the wordpress will not enlarge them.

The only on thing is to learn, what size of images is needed in future. I was trying to use as small as possible just to save space and loading time. What is acual minimum fitured image size requirement not to enlarge it in future?

I have settled the problem in two recomended steps.
1. I’ve installed and activated Thumbnail Upscale from here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/thumbnail-upscale/
2. Than I’ve started Regenerate Thumbnails from the very beginning. After it finished working it was everything OK, as I see.
We should understand that the quolity of photos after it are not the best. But it is better than when the size is simly wrong.

@shoxa You need to use Thumbnail Upscale plugin only if you use small featured images as they are cropped for different sizes and need to fit into the thumb container on modules. If it doesn’t work please check if the GD Library is installed on your side, wordpress requires it for cropping. Also that you have writing permissions on /wp-content/uploads and also check your /uploads folder and see if the thumbs are created.
@asoukhoverkhov There is no ideal size for the feature images but in order to fit the thumb container it should have at least the sizes of thumb’s container, because WordPress doesn’t enlarges images. The modules have thumbs with different aspect ratio and a part of the image may get lost on the cropping process. You could read more about the featured image size here (it’s from Newsmag documentation but the principles are the same) – https://forum.tagdiv.com/image-size/ You have to do some tests and see what aspect ratio to use, depending what blocks/modules you use most.

I tend to use 640×480 *or 640xNNN* photos where possible as good “standard size” for our main magazine site; and for our news portals we sometimes use 500×375 and don’t enlarge on the post itself, but allow enlargement on things like slider or featured image on category, as it still looks acceptable.

When saving out of Photoshop; start with a quality factor of 20 or 22, with a slight blur of 0.2, when doing “save for web.” For any image with a lot of “red” — you may need to go with “52” as the setting as red is not handled well by crappy jpeg old tech from the 20th century (same tech used on DVDs!) 🙂
