category page 404s

Seeing a lot of 404s coming mainly from the searchbots with this format:

http://mysitename.com/category/mycategoryname/page/5/

It happens for various categories and various page numbers and is not exclusive to only one category or only one page number.

Any idea what’s causing this and how to fix it?

If you have 5 pages of a category then delete something and only have 4 pages, then the page 5 would no longer exist and generate 404 error.

This is most common when importing the demo content, then deleting it to put your own content and using some of the same category names vs renaming them to your own.

Might not be your issue, but have seen that before 🙂

Having proper sitemap helps, too.

Thanks Chris,

It must be from when I accidentally imported demo content early on since I haven’t deleted any real content. I will check the sitemaps as well.

Looks like I had an old sitemap in place that was blocking my Yoast SEO sitemaps, so I took care of that. Thanks for the guidance.
