Use first image as featured image?

Previous themes I’ve used for my newspaper had the option to automatically set the first image in a post as the featured image. Newspaper doesn’t seem to support this. I’ve installed a plug-in that should provide this functionality, but it still doesn’t work — unless I manually select a featured image, I get the placeholder image as the thumbnail in blocks and category pages.

But oddly, I also get *two* images in my RSS feed — the featured image, and a thumbnail of it. This is a problem because MailChimp parses the RSS and send it as an email summary to readers.

Any suggestions?

Hello,
Our theme has no option to grab the first image and set it as featured but there are plugins that have this functionality and work with our theme. The only downside is these plugins are not tested. There is one we know of that users recommend but unfortunately it’s not free : https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/adding-rss-feed-from-other-websites/
As for the feed, maybe you could try to use another rss plugin and see if the image is doubled with other plugins as well.
Let us know how it goes.
Thanks.

I use one called Auto Post Thumbnail PRO from CodeCanyon/Envato/Themeforest. Cheap, works. Sets first photo/image in post as featured. We use this as we have news network, where some sites pull from the mothership, and the image in the post is actually loading from the mothership not the local syndicated site, so no featured image — this solves it.

A lot of older themes used to use a deprecated (retired) plugin to automatically do it. But almost no modern theme has “auto” function to make first image in post as featured.
