Webite Social Buttons, Preferred Domain on Homepage & Mobile Homepage Issue

Hi there,

It seems since updating to the latest Jan 7th Newspaper theme that the social buttons at the top of my website appear differently when the website displays without the www. The dropdown arrows also display as small boxes. I’ve set the preferred domain within webmaster tools so cannot understand why it would do this. There’s also an error on the mobile version where they cannot click one of the featured homepage images or that post title.

I’ve flushed the cache, reuploaded the latest Newspaper theme update with no success and have no new plugins activated.

Could this be the latest 4.4.1 WordPress update?

Would really appreciate a quick fix for this.

Thanks,
Mark

Caching may behave different on your setup with www and non www domain. Ideally you should setup your site to only serve *one* version of the site — not both. Most hosting panels allow you to specify a pref and do auto 301 redirect to the preferred version. You can also set that in the wp-config.php file for how wordpress renders all pages.

Many thanks for the quick reply. This issue has never occurred previously, and I can see that I have set a preferred domain within webmaster tools. What should I do now?

Yes, but still best to only have one version of site load — not both. Canonical links help specify which is which, so double check that too. Up to you, but I’d suggest making the fix on hosting panel, and in your wp-config.php file — Google doesn’t control your website, obviously but that helps. Still, if you have two versions of pages loading, that can impact how your stats, indexing, etc., work as it *is* two different versions of site loading … hence the idea of just ONE actually working.

Just a thought — if site works differently with and without, that kind of proves the point that they are working as two different beasts. By making ONE version the ONLY version, that should resolve the issue.
