is there a way to display latest posts in the Big Grid Slide Settings (e.g. the first block in the Newspaper Homepage demo) instead of filtering on one of the categories?

You can set the Big Grid Slider to filter by all categories and set the sort order as latest – http://screencast.com/t/VI4wejMpV
