Hello Guys,
I wanted to know weather this feature is compatiple with the newspaper6 theme version 6.6.3

There is a plugin made by Automattic here Though i understand its still in its early DEV stages i would like to know the following:

1.Is the plugin compatible with the newspaper 6 v6.6.3 theme?
2.If not is this a feature you are planing to implement in the near future say your next big update?

I’ve been using it since November without any issues.

No reason for it to be built into theme as it’s going to go through a lot of changes, and is best left as plugin so it can be updated independently of the theme files.

The Automattic plugin is best solution right now because they are the ones actually testing this with Google and big WP VIP sites like TIME magazine, etc. — so, right now that is the “bleeding edge.”

Presumably this is more likely going to be offered as addition to WP core at some point.

Benefit of the plugin for the time being is that theme developers don’t have to chase info they don’t have access to on where the framework is evolving and when/where it will be supported.

So, just turn on the plugin – it works 🙂

e.g., (with Newsmag)

Hi,

Thanks Chris!

@Mpasho Support Just an addition, as Christopher already replied that he use the plugin and it works and we did not tested any similar plugin so you should follow his suggestions, we will consider to add a weather widget in one of the future theme’s updates.

Thanks!

I’d also love to see support for Google AMP (once stable) within the theme itself. Looks like it’s rolling out into search in about a month.

Thanks!

Alin
you might want to add this topic to an inevitable FAQs page in the theme docs, as this one will start coming up a lot. Since folks are now hearing about it, even though it was announced last year — takes awhile for it to percolate outwards. Frankly having a web host with http/2 support is more critical in real world than AMP support, but the plugin right now *is* the best solution.

Everybody else:
problem with buildling this into a theme is that as this changes, it might require theme updates to stay on top of some elements and then becomes yet another thing related to WP changes that cause theme updates unrelated to the theme — and some folks do so much customization that multiple udpates per year turns into a major pain.

PLUGIN is best choice as it can be developed/updated, even customized, outside of the theme framework.

Using a plugin works too (as long as it is bundled and/or certified to work with the theme). Either way, looking forward using Newspaper and Newsmag with Google AMP.

Thanks

Case in point, plugin was updated TODAY.

No reason for theme folk to make their own version when the de-facto best solution for WP exists right now.

New version today has major updates for the AMP standard, and also new customization options.

It works with the theme. Doesn’t need to be bundled; as it’s easily downloaded for those who know what it is.

Upshot – use it ! 🙂

I’m using the same plugin and for me it seems to work eg: http://starzip.de/dschungelcamp-2016-kandidaten-wer-zieht-ein/amp , but when I look into my webmaster tools, Google tells me: “We did not find any Accelerated Mobile Pages in your site”. Google Struktured Data Testing Tools tells “No mistakes”. Is there anything else to do with the plugin to get Google to recognize AMP?

Google is not yet technically using AMP for everybody, but it’s coming soon … presumably with Chrome and Android Google will be scanning certain types of sites for compatibility as it does now with the “mobile ready” vector.

Google is great resource for looking up WHAT they are up to with this stuff.

E.g.,

https://www.ampproject.org/docs/get_started/create/prepare_for_discovery.html

Look for updates in search console once it fully ramps up 🙂

Thanks Chris. After submitting 2 of our …/amp links to Google they started recognizing us. Now they show a chart like for the indexed sitemaps telling that they indexed 6 posts so far 🙂

I’ve been watching it like a hawk over here … 🙂

They started sending out emails to sites with the plugin active during first week of February. If they “detect” your site running AMP protocol, they will send you email with links to check compatibility, and other tips/info on the AMP roll-out.
